Another way to see if the M52 "rpm drop" is normal is to compare with another car. Let's say you have a Honda, Mazda, or another BMW. Put the car in neutral. Rev the rpm to about 4,000 rpm (or 5,000 rpm), and look at your watch timer. Release the gas pedal and see how many sec it takes to go back down to 700 rpm or so.
